I love the massive ensemble of musicians he's gathered for the live renditions of the new songs - I guess this removes any doubt over whether or not he could replicate the complexities of the new album.

Skinny Love

'Bon Iver, Bon Iver' is out now and it's basically one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. Much fuller than 'For Emma' - it features so many more instruments and vocal layering. It's one of those albums that takes a long time to digest, and for a record that places so much importance on location, it is one that is easy to get lost in.

Got to see these four gentlemen play before megastick fanfare. Their set was rad, fun and bawsy. Mostly fun. I can't really describe their sound - it was very unique and varying, and not really anything like what they have on their bandcamp. Don't hesitate to go there and download some free albums though - they are very nice too.

Megastick Fanfare launched their much-looked-forward-to debut album at the Fbi Social last week. The songs were delivered with a heap of energy and focus. It was a joy to watch the hundreds of instruments and effects being put into use.

Alpine are a band from Melbourne who are very much on the rise. They've got a similar sound to Warpaint, if I'd have to compare them to anything. They will be bringing their tunes to the Oxford Art Factory on July 14th for something like 15 bucks. Below are a couple of tracks by the band and one remix, which is very Baths sounding. That's a good thing.

Gang Gang Dance have a reputation for releasing some pretty "challenging" experimental tracks. Take their first single off this album 'Glass Jar'. It doesn't kick in until after the 6 minute mark, instead building up slowly to an epic climax. Listening to the thing in its entirety is extremely rewarding - and as a prelude to 'Eye Contact' it works extremely well. Some of GGD's past albums have been just too noisy for my ageing ears. It seems they've sorta followed the Animal Collective trajectory and become increasingly "listenable" with each album. 2008's 'Saint Dyphna' was awesome, but 'Eye Contact' just takes it to another level. It's definitely a very diverse album grabbing influence from oriental soundscapes, The Knife, 80's basslines and outer space. There are as many soulful 'let's make babies' moments as there are crazy 'im so high on drugs and I HAVE to dance' moments.

The Drums were in Sydney last night supporting their slot at Groovin' The Moo in Canburr. They had switched up a little since I last saw them at Splendour. I didn't really like the change too much, the crazy tambourine guy is now restricted to keys/synths. Unfortunately, this doesn't give him any opportunity to dance around like a ballerina. Also, Jonathan Pierce's vocals get a bit annoying after about 3 songs, but maybe that's just me. I was a bit grumpy during the show as it was almost impossible to shoot. Photographers get three songs for a show - for the first song there was almost NO lighting at all. For the second song, my camera decided to act a fool and be useless. I spent the third song frantically tracing Pierce around the stage, but he just moves so damn fast. After I finished shooting, I did enjoy his dance moves - executed with speed, skill and precision.

Leif Podhajsky is a brilliant digital artist who uses symmetry, repetition and colour to create deeply psychedelic artworks. I like him so much, that I even stole one his pictures for the blog header. He's designed album artwork for Tame Impala and Lykke Li and now he's even making his own mix-tapes. They're absolutely SICK and have some really obscure foreign funk/psychedelia tracks. Danger Beach makes beautiful, surfy, cowboy pop. It's all done by a Canberra dude called LA Thomas, who features as one half of Assasins 88. The photo above is from their show at Black Wire Records early last year. It was crazy. Stream the track 'Apache' below but be aware that it will probably make you want quit your job, go Clint Eastwood on errbody and just ride a horse all day. This is a track of Megastick's new album 'Grit Aglow', which is out May 6th. I'm almost certain it will be my favourite Australian album of the year (unless Tame Impala's imminent album is released). They've got a fun and unique sound - mixing harmonies and underwater electronic soundscapes. The vocals remind me a lot of Animal Collective, especially their more tribal work like 'Brother Sport' or 'Lion in a Coma'. I believe that Megastick Fanfare are playing at the excellent new fbi venue in Kings Cross at some point next month. I highly recommend you get to that, it will surely sell out and will be a mind-bending show.

Magnetic Heads performed as a duo (usually a five piece I believe). The male singer had one of the best head wobbles I have ever seen. It went perfectly with the music.

Last weekend, I had the pleasure to catch Ernest Ellis at the new Fbi venue in King's Cross. 'Hunting' was one of my favourite Australian releases of 2010 and I had been lucky to see the band a few times on their tour of that album. To my surprise they filled in their set with completely new jams, playing only three tracks from 'Hunting'. The new songs (aided by two new band members) sounded awesome - they packed enough energy to fill a whole arena with sound.

"Nine Types of Light is as much an album as it is a movie by TV on the Radio. The movie is meant to be a visual re-imagining of the record, and includes a music video for every song on the album. The band personally asked their friends and the filmmakers they admired to help direct the music videos. Tunde Adebimpe, the director for the full Nine Types of Light movie, storybooked the music videos together with interviews from local New Yorkers on various topics, including dreams, love, fame and the future. Tunde also directed the music video for Forgotten. Nine Types of Light, both the album and the movie are set to release on April 12, 2011."

Fleet Foxes have just premiered the second track from their forthcoming LP 'Helplessness Blues'. The song is called 'Battery Kinzie'. It's probably one of the most upbeat and energetic tracks by the band to date. Pecknold's vocals are impeccable as usual (and as clearly exhibited in his solo, all acoustic mini-EP released earlier this month). The album is out on the 3rd of May, but if you've got a lot of money that you are keen to donate to the Japan disaster, you can own the album next week by bidding on ebay. Presently, the test pressing is going for over $2000

So the new Radiohead album has been out for a little over a week now. At only 37 minutes, it's the shortest LP by the band to date. This has led to suggestions that 'King of Limbs' is only the first part of a double album, much like the Kid A/Amnesiac creation. While I don't know if that's true, I don't mind the album being so short - some of the songs are so complex, that four years since 'In Rainbows' doesn't seem unreasonable. 'King of Limbs' combines the dubby beats and bleeps of Kid A with the melodic softness of 'In Rainbows' and 'Hail To the Thief'. While it does sound new and different, 'King of Limbs' is possibly the least ground-breaking of all the Radiohead albums. In my opinion, this is not a big deal - I like the way the album sounds, and I wasn't expecting them to create a new genre. Listening to this group of songs is a great experience - and although it doesn't have a strong uniting theme or mission statement, it definitely competes with previous Radiohead albums in terms of listenability. While 'In Rainbows' leads you somewhere, 'King of Limbs' feels trapped in a forest of angst and schizophrenia. The first four tracks are very hectic and beat-driven creations, bringing us back to the Kid A days while still paying tribute to their contemporaries (such as Flying Lotus). After the final chopped up frenetic beat of 'Feral', Radiohead bring on the melancholy with a quartet of awesome come-down songs. Here are a couple of tracks from the album.

This is a lot like 'Nude', 'Sail to The Moon' and '4 Minute Warning'. It has that opiate effect, of dulling the senses and relaxing the mind - allowing your thoughts to drifts into deeper levels of consciousness. In other words, it's a great drug song.

Give Up the Ghost (Track 7)
A loop of Yorke crooning "don't hurt/haunt me" replaces the drum loop of previous tracks. A comforting acoustic guitar strums a lovely melody, while Thom Yorke laments beautifully over the top.

I've been listening to this song almost every day for the past two weeks. I'm addicted to the melody. The whole album is covered in a lo-fi haze sounding like it was made by a guy in his smoke-filled bedroom, with poor recording equipment. The whole record is really wonderful and I urge you to check it out. This track remind me a lot of Morrisey/The Smiths as it's romantic and miserable at the same time. In this song, he laments that "our lips won't last forever and that's exactly why/I'd rather live in dreams and I'd rather die". The album has more of the same.

If San Francisco had a sound, it would be Girls. Their debut LP was laced with smells of medical marijuana and cheap mexican food. I have just had the pleasure of listening to a couple of tracks from their newest collection of songs. It's called "Broken Dreams Club" and the track list looks a little something like this:
1. "The Oh So Protective One"
2. "Heartbreaker"
3. "Broken Dreams Club"
4. "Alright"  
5. "Substance"
6. "Carolina"

If you want the rest of the songs, you're gonna have to get all illegal and shit. Or you could be a good person buy the EP when you go see them at Manning bar next month. Tickets are about $40 here

By a brilliant strike of fate, Jacob from Sydney band The Bell Weather Department contacted me about some photos I had taken of his band at the Gaelic supporting The Holidays. Somehow we got the ball rolling and decided it would be a good idea to take some band photos. The shoot took place in and around the Tram Sheds at Harold Park. I definitely think these guys are band to look out for in the future. Not only are they ridiculously good looking, they've got a couple of great songs too. Well produced and catchy as hell. I attended/photographed a Bridezilla concert last night. I was very excited to see them after catching them at changing lanes earlier. They were mesmerizing, beautiful and intense. Really dark and moody tunes.

Exquisitely loud and mesmerizing tunes from Warpaint. These chicks are coming out for Laneway and an Oxford Art sideshow. The first video is a song called 'Stars'. It basically shows the girls rocking out and looking extremely hot... 'Billie Holiday' is a beautiful acoustic homage sung under an umbrella in a rainy street. Although the girls look 'less hot', it's still very enjoyable.
